Anxiety Through the Ages: What Our Nervous System Tells Us

sarapliacha

Anxiety isn’t just a modern-day inconvenience—it’s an evolutionary survival tool. While feeling anxious during a presentation or stuck in traffic may seem unnecessary, it all stems from a deeply ingrained mechanism designed to keep us alive. This mechanism activates two critical systems in our body: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

Understanding the Nervous System

Our nervous system has two key players:

  • The sympathetic nervous system (SNS), also known as the “fight or flight” system, kicks in when we perceive a threat. It floods the body with adrenaline and cortisol, increases heart rate, and prepares us for action—essentially acting as an internal alarm system.

  • The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is the “rest and digest” system, responsible for slowing things down and helping us recover after the perceived danger has passed.

In today’s world, many of our “threats” are psychological, like deadlines, social pressures, or uncertainty. While they don’t require physical action like running or fighting, our SNS still reacts as if they do. Over time, chronic activation of this system can leave us feeling drained, tense, and overwhelmed.

How Can We Use This Knowledge?

Understanding how the nervous system works allows us to manage anxiety more effectively:

  • Mindful Breathing: Slow, deep breaths stimulate the vagus nerve, activating the PNS and calming the body.

  • Movement and Grounding: Physical activity, such as walking or yoga, helps balance the SNS and PNS, reducing tension.

  • Recognizing Triggers: Identifying what sparks your anxiety can empower you to use calming techniques proactively.

Takeaway

Anxiety is a natural part of life, but it doesn’t have to overwhelm you. By understanding and working with your nervous system, you can better manage your responses and create a sense of balance. Think of it as a collaboration between your body and mind, guiding you toward greater well-being.
